Article on Electronic Performance Monitoring, Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) and Privacy Invasion published
The monitoring of work activities by digital systems and AI in companies is steadily increasing. Research shows that employees feel their privacy is violated by digital control. Advocates of digital control argue that employees react less negatively to digital control if they have a good, trusting relationship with their superiors. Our study shows that employees are concerned about their privacy when exposed to digital control and that their needs for autonomy, competence and rapport are threatened, which is linked to lower work motivation and a higher intention to quit. A good relationship with the manager can mitigate some of these negative effects.
